Connecting Grade One and Grade Two

Guided Reading provides a chance for the teacher to work with small groups of children who are at similar places in their reading journey.  Classrooms typically have a two year (or more) range of readers within any given group.  The following is a small taste of what we do during Guided Reading.  Our small groups support the children in learning to be comfortable with predicting what a story might be about, using a variety of strategies to determine unknown words, focusing on comprehension of the material being read, discussing why characters act the way they do, and relating the stories to experiences in their own lives.  The Guided Reading groups are flexible and ever changing, as are the reading skills of these young children. The books we work with are leveled; with A through J being typical grade one levels and J through M being typical grade two levels.  All students learn to be meaningfully engaged with independent activities during the time the classroom teachers’ work with small groups.  These activities include Reading to Self, Reading to Others, Writing, Word Wall work and Listening to Someone.

The students will all be bringing home Word Wall words (spelling words) on a weekly basis.  The children are expected to both read and spell these words.  We will be sending these words home on Fridays, and working with them in class the following week.

Mathematics

We will begin the year by looking at several different areas of math, largely working with patterns, sorting and number concepts.  I will typically be addressing the same strands in math for each grade.  Grade one and two connect very well and this provides a manageable way of introducing topics and then moving on to differentiate what each grade is expected to learn.  I have lined up the present and upcoming Learning Outcomes for each grade below.

"Grade One

Recite forward by 1s the number sequence between 0 and 10.
Recite backward by 1s the number sequence between 0 and 10.
Record a given numeral (0-10) symbolically when it is presented orally.
Read a given numeral (0-10) when it is presented symbolically.
Identify the number represented by a given arrangement of dots on a ten frame.
Answer the question, “How many are in the set?”, using the last number counted in a given set (0-10).
Show that the count of a number of the number of objects in a given set does not change regardless of the order in which the objects are counted.
Represent a given number up to 10, using a variety of manipulatives, including ten frames and base ten materials.
Find examples of a given number in the environment, to 10.
Build a set equal to a given set that contains up to 10 elements.

Describe a given repeating pattern containing two to four elements in its core.
Sort a given set of objects, using a given sorting rule.

" "Grade Two
Say the number sequence 0 to 100 by 2s, 5s and 10s forward and backward, using starting points that are multiples of 2, 5 and 10.
10s using starting points from 1 to 9
Review addition and subtraction strategies to 20
Solve and create problems that involve addition and subtraction (review to 20 this month)
Use personal strategies for adding and subtracting
Demonstrate and explain the effect of adding zero

Represent and describe numbers to 100 concretely (50 review first), pictorially and symbolically
Compare and order numbers up to 100

Demonstrate an understanding of repeating patterns (3 to 5 elements) by: describing, extending, comparing and creating

Sort a set of objects, using two attributes and explain the sorting rule."
